SUNSHINE-DRENCHED POP SYMPHONICA
“The musical delights coming from The Polyphonic Spree were, simply put, heaven.” – In The Mix, January 2005
Returning to Australia this July for the first time since bringing their life-affirming music to our shores in the summer of 2005, THE POLYPHONIC SPREE will play three east coast shows - the Metro Theatre in Sydney, the Hi-Fi Bar in Melbourne and Brisbane’s Tivoli before they delight crowds with their joyous, and spiritually uplifting performance at the sold out SPLENDOUR IN THE GRASS in Byron Bay early August.
They have ditched the white robes (now memorialised in an emblem on their new outfit) for a darker, more worldly stage presence comprising of black fatigues and clip-on red crosses with hearts. Musically, THE POLYPHONIC SPREE still create the most euphoric, uplifting pop music imaginable and the sheer joy of their music is undeniably persuasive.
Like all genre-busters, they’re hard to describe, but one of the best phrases to illustrate THE POLYPHONIC SPREE is symphonic pop. Ringleader/ composer/ shaman Tim DeLaughter is behind the whole thing, with a cohesive, relentlessly optimistic take on the world and all of its problems, with hope, rather than the ever-popular beast of nihilism, being its driving force. While it’s easy to get lost in the presentation of it all, the matching outfits, the ten-voice choir, the obscure instruments, THE POLYPHONIC SPREE is a pop band at heart, and so contagious is their enthusiasm, one listen, and you’ll be hooked on the happiness.
Released late last year, The Fragile Army is their third full-length album and is both a return to tried and true methods of earlier work, such as Together We’re Heavy and simultaneously, a departure. The enormous sound of THE POLYPHONIC SPREE, with its tightly structured compositions hasn’t lost its trademark sunshine-drenched pop symphonica, yet gained a more textured melancholy in the darker themed songs first touched on within the early 2007 EP Wait. To the newer convert, there’s an Arcade Fire-esque sense of build and excitement to many of these songs, with the choir and extra instrumentalists adding drama to the pop song skeletons that DeLaughter has composed.
These shows are now your only chance to catch THE POLYPHONIC SPREE live this time round, with tickets on sale THURSDAY 26th JUNE. Give in to the rapture of this musical community, and be drawn in to their infectious pop musicology, you’ll never look back.
REFRESHING & CATCHY, THE JOHN STEEL SINGERS SUPPORT THE POLYPHONIC SPREE
Sharing a common love of inventive pop melodies, THE POLYPHONIC SPREE welcomes Brisbane six-piece THE JOHN STEEL SINGERS along for the ride when they play shows in Sydney, Melbourne and Brisbane later this month.
With a growing legion of fans, great reviews and high profile supports, THE JOHN STEEL SINGERS are one of Australia’s most exciting up and coming alternative artists.
Together since late 2005, these purveyors of glorious backyard summer pop melodies fast became triple j darlings, impressively named both a JJJ Next Crop Artist and 2007’s Unearthed winner resulting in high rotation airplay for their song Strawberry Wine.
Expect to hear new tunes aplenty when THE JOHN STEEL SINGERS delight audiences with quirky tracks from their recently released debut mini-album The Beagle and the Dove.
Comprising of various instruments including keys, trombone and trumpet amidst the usual foreground of guitars, bass and drums combined with several voices, their live show is colourful and energetic.
